‘Norm’ in the Normal – David Defeats Goliath

Don't Fear The Uncharted

Bible teaches us that David was a man after God’s own heart. David had his own success’s and failures just like any of us but what made David a cut above the rest was that his heart was always looking to God. He had a deep desire to follow God in-spite of what we know from the Bible that David was far from perfect. He had unshakable faith in the God He believed and worshiped.

If we just look at the extra-ordinary way of David becoming a king, his journey is an excellent reminder to us that God orchestrates His plans in His own ways and in His own perfect Timing.
David was chosen ‘ King’ while Saul was still a King. Samuel, the last judge of Israel is led by God to the family of Jesse in Bethlehem. Based on their appearances, Samuel assumes that the 1st son Eliab is God’s replacement for Saul. But clearly Eliab was not God’s choice. Then he passes Abinadab, Shammah and 7 of his son’s who were not God’s choices for leading his people.

1 Sam 16:17 God Says ” Do not consider the appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things that man looks at. Man looks at outward appearance, bu the Lord looks at the heart “

When all this was happening at Jess’s place, David who was a shepherd boy was actually tending his sheep. He had to be called for before the Lord confirms that infact He is the appointed king

1 Sam 16:12  “He was ruddy, had beautiful eyes and was handsome “

And the Lord said ” Arise, anoint him, for this is he “

v 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward “

Though he was anointed the King, David had to wait for almost 15 years before he could actually reign as a King. He had his own journey of being molded and shaped by God.

We see God’s favor with David throughout , especially when he became Saul’s favorite armor bearer and skillfully played for him when the evil spirit tormented Saul ( v 14 )

David is described as ‘ a man who is skilled in playing the lyre, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, a man of good presence and the Lord is with him ‘

This was a bit of history on how David was chosen to be a king. Let’s look at the extra-ordinary story of how he defeated Goliath

The NORM in the NORMAL – FAITH LIKE ABRAHAM

the norm in the normal_faith like abraham_pic

We all have dreams BIGGER than ourselves. Aspirations that go far beyond the skies. Hope that is never-ending because of the God we trust in.

YET most often we surrender our thinking to this one little thought that hinders and handicaps us from stepping forward and stepping out

‘I am just a normal person, trying to live my life ‘or ‘I am just a normal person who has a normal life of going to work to earn my living, supporting my family and just trying to live a calm life ‘

And in the midst of living our ‘NORM’ al lives, we get side tracked from the very purpose that God created us. There is a potential risk of missing out on the calling of God and wondering ‘WHY,  ‘WHAT HAPPENED ‘ and ‘ MY LIFE IS RIGHT WHERE I STARTED ‘

There are many characters in the Bible who were ‘ NORMAL’ men and women just like one of us. They are no different from us in that they also faced the hardest and toughest battles of life. They were also faced with giants in their life that we all have to deal with. For some it is idolatry, for some it is adultery, for some it is unexpected life incidents like miscarriages, divorce, loss of loved ones, for some it’s life transitions like moving from their home country or changing jobs to a totally new area , for some it is finding life partner or becoming a parent.

What made them stand out in their lives is the choices that made in their ‘NORMAL’ life when they were faced with situations. They were obedient to the Word of God and willing to break the ‘NORM’ in the ‘NORMAL’ so they can live their faith out in a way that glorifies God. They trusted God , relied on Him and waited on Him to fulfil all their heart’s desires.

NORM is defined as something that is usual, typical, or standard.

In the coming weeks, we will be looking at  some of the Biblical characters in this context on how they overcame the NORM in the NORMAL. Let’s keep in mind that these were just NORMAL people in their day and age, just like us in this modern age.

Breakthrough

We pray for a breakthrough all the time. A breakthrough in our marriage, a breakthrough in our finances, a breakthrough in our job, a breakthrough in our relations, a breakthrough in our children’s behavior, a breakthrough in the world’s unjust happenings and a lot more ..

I looked up on the dictionary on what the word ‘ breakthrough’ stands for
and it came up with this

‘break through something to force your way through something that is stopping you from moving forward’

This morning I want to you to take a moment to ponder about ‘ what is stopping you from moving forward ?’ And ‘ what does it takes from yourself to see yourself to force through that ‘something’ so you can get your breakthrough ..

My prayer for you today is whatever breakthrough you are looking for, may the good Lord be gracious to bring it pass to you in His time and May you have the endurance during the process.

Trust in the Lord’s mighty and outstretched arms to lead you into your breakthrough

May you be blessed by this song ‘ breakthrough ‘. If God can do it for me, He can do it for you too .. He loves us too much to see us suffer

Breakthrough
===========

You never fail
Nor give up on failures like me
You always show up
Breaking through the storm
Like a lightning in the storm
Also quietening the waves
That roar to take the faith
That you have put in my heart
For the glory of Your name

Your light shines through the darkness
Breaking through the clouds
The clouds of fear and doubt
Your light expels the sins in our lives
And keep them far away
As far is east is from the west

Now I break free from my past
All the failures and hurts
Don’t exist anymore
Now I declare , that I am a new person in Christ
The Lord has given me a breakthrough !!
The old is gone and the new has come
I am a new person in Him

Your hand is more than mighty to save
And we will forever raise our hands
To Praise Your Holy Name
To Praise Your Holy Name

Father God,

May you be the be the rainbow of breakthrough in our clouds of darkness
We continue to trust in Your mighty hand to save us

In Jesus Name
Amen
