Lent – Day 14 – RESIST the devil and FLEE to GOD

The Bible gives us many valuable examples on dealing with temptation. Lessons that apply to our practical life and very relevant for our day-to-day lives

One of my favourite scriptures that I stand upon, when I am battling negative thoughts and doubts that play up with my mind is James 4:7

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you- James 4:7

What we need to note here is that some of these negative thoughts and doubts don’t even exist in our real minds. They just pop up out of nowhere and start taking away your peace for no apparent reason. Such thoughts from the devil captivate us and bind us so if trapped we don’t think of a way out but rather we sit there meditating on that destructive thinking and feel helpless / hopeless for ourselves, drowning in a pool of self pity and despair

When was Jesus led by the spirit  in the wilderness to be tempted and tested by the devil. When Jesus fasted 40 days and 40 nights and while he was still hungry, the devil tried to tempt Him to use His power to turn the stones into bread

If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread – Matt 4:3

Jesus resisted the Devil with the Word of God. He replied

“It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God – Matt 4:4

The devil did not want to give up. The devil took Him to the highest point of the temple in the Holy city and tempted Jesus to test the promises of God, by saying

If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down. For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you,
and they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone – Matt 4:6

Jesus confronted the devil again with the Word of God. He replied

It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test’ Matt 4:7

The devil wanted to give one final try this time before accepting defeat

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. “All this I will give you,” he said, “if you will bow down and worship me.”- Matt 4:8

This time again, Jesus stood strong with the Word of God against the devil. He replied

“Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only – Matt 4:10

This time around, the devil left Jesus alone , and the angels came and attended Him

When trapped in a net of temptation, the first armour to our rescue is the Word of God. The devil is a liar and he needs to confronted with the TRUTH that is the WORD OF GOD.

Anyone can know the Word of God, even the devil knows Jesus and knows the Word of God enough to tempt Him, even Him who created the Word. What is really important here is the right interpretation of the Word of God and the proper application of it in our day-to-day lives. The Word of God cannot be twisted and re-told for want of attraction of a bunch of audience or just to make it sound more interesting. Word of God is true and interesting in itself. There is no editing required.

When temptation sends you an invitation at your door step, RESIST him and FLEE to GOD.

My prayer for you today is for you is from Ephesians 6:10-18, for you to realise that there is evil out in the word and that evil can be defeated if we stand against it with the Word of God and all that He has empowered us with to combat the devil.

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, 15 and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.  Ephesians 6:10-18

Stay Blessed in Him

Lent – Day 12 – Disk Space FULL

Time and Time again there is ONE issue that gets me ALL the time. I try my hardest but still FAIL at it. I am sure  some of you would have come across this most annoying issue, that is if you own a phone or a computer. DISK SPACE FULL

Okay, I am not a big MAC person but I do use an iPhone with a HUGE 128GB storage. STILL I have this constant issue of my iPhone getting full as I keep installing applications as I please and take pictures as I please. As a result, when I REALLY need to capture a cute moment of my daughter or install an app that I really need , I JUST CAN’T. There is NO OTHER way than for me to delete unwanted stuff from my iPhone for me to upload the stuff that I really need.

Our human lives mirror this iPhone storage issue a lot. We often fill our life’s vacuum and empty feelings with things that are our wants and that makes us feel better, temporarily. Let’s be honest here. How many of us in those despair moments of life have had a pity party to ourselves, with loads of chocolate on the bed and watching emotional movies JUST feeling sorry for ourselves. I have been down that road and it did not take long for me to realise that , that path was literally self gratification and self destruction. I am all for self-care but there is a fine line between self-care and self-pity. I learnt that despair moments are overcome with praise moments with God. In as much ridiculous as it sounds, it is REAL and it has ALWAYS worked for me

Lent – Day 10 – Gospel in a Nutshell

jesus saves

Jesus came to the world to die for our sins. Death has to be defeated on the Cross so you and I can have an eternal life. Jesus rose again after 3 days thus offering the humanity an opportunity to live an eternal life. Anyone that believes in God , God gives them the right to be called His children and partake in the eternal life.

John 3:16 gives the message of the Bible in a nutshell

This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person’s failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him.

John 3:16

There was a man called Saul in the Bible, who initially persecuted Christians. He was the one that lead a major persecution against Christians in Jerusalem. On the road to Damascus, Saul made a miraculous turnaround which is recorded in the Bible in the Book of Acts.He witnessed the Christ  he was persecuting and his life was never  the same. He became the chosen vessel of God to proclaim His good news to the nations around the world. He became knows as Paul after his conversion to Christ and his life  was transformed for the glory of God. God’s love is transformational and life changing for good.

Below is what Paul preached about the gospel to the ends of the world.

Let me now remind you, dear brothers and sisters,[a] of the Good News I preached to you before. You welcomed it then, and you still stand firm in it. It is this Good News that saves you if you continue to believe the message I told you—unless, of course, you believed something that was never true in the first place.[b]

I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said. He was buried, and he was raised from the dead on the third day, just as the Scriptures said

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

God’ love is so deep to reach you even in your deepest valleys and His love is so strong to deliver you even from the impossible of the impossible. His love for you stretches above the skies and beyond the seas. He promises to be with you to the very end of age. There can be no friend like Jesus that you can gain on this earth and He extends His love to you today. All you need is to RECEIVE His unconditional love for you to experience it

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is LORD,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

Romans 10: 9 -10

My prayer for you today my friend is that you will open your heart to receive His love. My deepest desire is for you to taste and see that the Lord is good. May this be a day of resurrection in your lives. The choice is yours ! May you choose the Heavens above and let Him shine through your lives

Stay Blessed in Him

Lent – Day 9 – The ‘PEEK A BOO ‘ Game

My 4 year old daughter came up to me and said ” Momma, I am going to show you a magic trick but you need to close your eyes for a second “. She had a rice cracker in her hand and she said she was going to make it disappear by the time I opened my eyes.

So here I sit listening to my 4 year old’s instructions, closing my eyes and waiting for her to tell me to open my eyes. I heard my daughter eating the rice crackers and I told her ” Hannah, I hear you eating the rice crackers ” .

Her reply was so funny that I had to laugh out aloud. She said ” Momma, you have to pretend as if you don’t hear anything. That’s my magic “

So there we went again repeating the whole thing over, but this time I pretended that I didn’t hear any of that noise that came from her eating them. Then she says ” Open your eyes, Peek a Boo – look the crackers have disappeared ” and continues to ask me ” Do you like my magic trick ?  “

She is too gorgeous for me to tell her the actual truth or a long explanation so I just responded ” Wow, how did you do that ? ” . Little does she know that Momma is watching all her moves including eating her crackers. I love her so much that sometimes I let her get away with things like this.

Sometimes we play this PEEK A BOO game with God.  We try to do our own things in our own way and try to convince God that our way is either the right way or the best. We actually pretend and live in a delusion state that we can control our lives and manage our lives all by ourselves. Some people even think that they don’t need a God or even worse they firmly believe that Jesus is a myth. But God is not a myth. Just because someone feels a certain way about something, doesn’t change the very existence of that thing

Billy Graham, one of the most faithful servant of the Lord was welcomed Home into the presence of Jesus today. He spent seven decades of spreading the gospel to more than 200 million people in 185 countries in the world.

In the summer of 2015 at his “Final Crusade” Graham said the below

Deep inside we need something else. And that something else can be brought about by JesusBilly Graham

Billy Graham encourages us to come to God as we are without any pretence.

In God’s economy, you must go down into the valley of grief before you can scale the heights of spiritual glory. You must become tired and weary of living alone before you seek and find the fellowship of Christ. You must come to the end of “self” before you can begin to live. The happiest day of my life was when I realized that my own ability, my own goodness, and my own morality were insufficient in the sight of God. I am not exaggerating when I say that my mourning was turned to joy, and my sighing into singing. Happy are they that mourn for the inadequacy of self, for they shall be comforted with the sufficiency of God.

Today is a call out in the open. Today is a bold call to wake up from the pretend sleep and trying to put on a show that everything is alright . Today is THE day to STOP the PEEK A BOO game we have been playing with God. Today is the day of salvation, where we turn our hearts to repentance and call on the Lord to save us and set us FREE

“Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, ‘Woe to those who call evil good,’ but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbour’s possessions and called it ambition. We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honoured values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and set us free. Amen!”
Billy Graham

Lent – Day 6 – Abounding Grace

abounding grace

As I begin writing this post, I am reminded of this beautiful good old hymn ‘ Amazing Grace’ by John Newton. I am humbled and overwhelmed even by the very thought that the Lord of the Universe saved a wretch like me, accepted me , loved me unconditionally and adopted me into His family, FREELY. AMAZING GRACE !!!

Amazing Grace

How sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me

I once was lost but now am found

Was blind but now I see

Charles Haddon Spurgeon in his book, All of Grace quotes the below on grace

Grace is the first and last moving cause of salvation; and faith, essential as it is, is only an important part of the machinery which grace employs. We are saved ‘through faith,’ but salvation is ‘by grace’

He adds on to say the below
Jesus did not die for our righteousness, but He died for our sins. He did not come to save us because we were worth saving, but because we were utterly worthless, ruined, and undone. He did not come to earth out of any reason that was in us, but solely and only because of reasons which He took from the depths of His own divine love. In due time He died for those whom He describes not as godly but as ungodly, applying to them as hopeless an adjective as He could have selected.”
Jesus replaced ABIDING LAW with HIS ABOUNDING GRACE. Jesus substituted the animal sacrifice from the law by becoming the ultimate sacrifice , thus defeating death on the Cross, just for you and me and all of mankind.
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
John 1:17
Hebrews 10 talks about the ultimate sacrifice of Christ once for ALL.
First He said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. Then He said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second.10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all
15 But there is a great difference between Adam’s sin and God’s gracious gift. For the sin of this one man, Adam, brought death to many. But even greater is God’s wonderful grace and his gift of forgiveness to many through this other man, Jesus Christ Romans 5 :15
A gift is a waste and has no value until it is accepted by the person that it is given to. God offers His grace freely to us so we can experience an abundant life He has in store for us.
My prayer for you today is that your heart be prepared to accept the grace of God upon your life and into every walks of your life. The divine grace of God has the power to save, to forgive, to restore and rebuild things that seems impossible in human strength.
I pray that you choose the pathway to heaven today.
16 So let us come boldly to the very throne of God and stay there to receive his mercy and to find grace to help us in our times of need
Stay Blessed in Him
Feel free to share your lent thoughts with me as we do this journey together
PS :  There will be no lent devotions on Sunday

Lent – Day 3 – Know Your Belonging

child of god

We are driven by a sense of belonging this day and age.  I read this quote on google from Brene Brown about the sense of belonging

Those who have a strong sense of love and belonging have the courage to be imperfect

A sense of belonging occurs when you have a feeling of being connected. The heartbeat of any connection is communication. In God’s kingdom, the very reason God created us is to have fellowship with Him so we can know Him

God has called us so we can come to know Him – John 17:3

If we look at the life of Jesus , He set an example for us to slow down the fast paced life to spend time with His Father. He often chose moments of solitude to pray and listen to God for His life comfort and direction.

Jesus knew Who He belonged to. He knew His identity in God.

Today I want to encourage you to dig a bit into your identity in Christ and know who you really belong to

God adopted you into His Family

He predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ , in accordance with His pleasure and will

Ephesians 1:5

You are the child of God

But as many as received him, to them gave he the right to become children of God, [even] to them that believe on his name

John 1:12

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

1 John 3 : 1-2

You are a chosen one

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation , God’s special possession , that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light

1 Peter 2 : 9

As you reflect on your sense of belonging in Christ

My prayer for you is Colossians 3 : 1-3

1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.
3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

FINALLY , Its time to say HELLO to GOD . Know Him to REALLY Know Him

Stay Blessed in Him

When Perception Overrides Perspective

Let your perspective of things not affect the way you perceive things in the present

Let your perspective of things not affect the way you perceive things in the present. Let your perspective be based on what you perceive in the present world. When reality hits hard, one needs to let go of their perspective of things and embrace perceiving things just the way they are to find a way out.

Perspective according to the dictionary can be defined as ‘ a particular attitude towards or a way of regarding something. A point of view

Perceive could be defined as the ability to recognize, discern or understand.

Say for example, each of us view life from our own perspective, contributing factors could be our age, culture, family, life circumstances and possibly a lot more. For example from a new mom’s perspective life could be both exciting and exhausting at the same time, a students perspective on life could be both adventurous and sometimes boring, a working mom’s perspective on life could be both rewarding and sacrificial.. the list goes on.. The point here is if you need to understand a new mom’s perspective on life, you need to perceive life through the eyes of a new mom to really understand their view point on why they feel and act a certain way

Looking at things from a new perspective can change your perception of things. And when we do that, we learn to appreciate each other’s differences in the most gracious way.
